Sci-fi

The Orville -

The Orville is an american science fiction comedy drama created by and starring Seth Mcfarlane. the series has been inspired by a number of factors, although Mcfarlane has noted 'Star Trek' and 'Twighlight zone' as the main contributors. The Orville is  a mid level exploratory spaceship in the Planetary Union, carrying a  25th-century interstellar crew of Earth and aliens from other distant planets.

This clip from 'the orville' accuratley demonstartes the stylistic codes of the sci-fi genre, this clip shows a huge development of technology and alien life forms which are mostly found in sci-fi books, films and television. This scene also shows how using mis en scene can present the realtionship between characters; Ed is standing up in the center which makes him appear superior, whereas his companion is sat down which makes him infereior.  The clip begins with a close up of a pod, and then uses a dolly shot to show the orville. this is an effective technique because it shows the enormity of the ship and how insignificant the pod is in comparison. The scene then cuts too a close up of Ed and his team mate from outside the ship, then the perspective changes so you see the same view from behind. This is also effective because it might make the audience feel as if they are on the ship and travelling with the duo, but it also helps to further demonstarte the enormity of the orville and the vast vacume of space. The scene then cuts to a tracking shot of the pod as it travels around the ship ready for landing, this is an effective technique because it shows the speed they are travelling at. Once the pod has landed, an establishing shot of the crew is used; they are seen standing in ordered rows which further demonstartes a force of authority and order. Whilst the captain is talking, a panning shot is used where the foreground is out of focus and the captain is the center of focus.

Back to the future -

Back to the future is an 1985 American sci-fi film, written by Zemeckis and Bob Gale. The film has a non-linear narrative, centered around Dr Brown, an eccentric and inventor of the time travelling Delorean, and his teenage companion Marty Mcfly. The pair end up in 1955, where Marty meets his future parents and becomes his mothers love interest. They are stuck in 1955 with no plutonium to get home, Marty tracks down docs younger self for help. Doc tells Marty that the only power surce capable of producing enugh electricity for the time machiene is a bolt of lightining. Marty sets about fixing history before heading home during a storm.

this scene from the first back to the future film begins with a tracking shot as Marty is travelling on his skateboard. This then transitions into a long shot, showing Marty and his dog. This might of been done to show the desolate surroundings but also the relationship between man and dog. A loud and deep sound can be heard, drawing the viewers attention to the metal sea container that is now lowering. This scene uses the eyeline rule, because Martys head is craining upwards as he looks at what is infront of him which is followed by a wide shot of what he is looking at. This is an effective technique because it allows the viewer to feel fully immersed in the action by looking from Martys perspective.   As the door for the scene container opens slowly, the camera cuts back slowly zooming in to Marty as he begins to stand up. This is effective because it shows the look of shock and confusuion on the teenagers face, which is being highlighted through the use of white light. The camera then cuts to the reaction of the dog as he turns his head in confusion, this is effective because it is done for commical purpose. As the Delorean is moving out of the container, a overhead shot is used to show the size and technology of the car.

Although thease examples use similar stylistic codes and camera angles, they are done for different purposes. 'The Orville' is designed to be serious, despite having various commical moments. whereas 'Back to the future' focuses on the eccentric doctor and is played for laughs.

Horror/Thriller

Santa Clarita Diet - Santa Clarita Diet is an american horror-comedy series, first released on February 3rd 2017 and created by Victor Fresco, starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. The series follows Joel and Sheila Hammond who are estate agents. The couple are faced with a series of obstacles when sheila becomes a zombie and craves human flesh. Whilst Sheilas family are trying to help sheila through this difficult time, they have to deal with neighbors and cultural norms whilst simultaneously trying to get to the bottom of a mythological mystery. This scene begins using non-degetic fast paced audio, that micmicks the sound of footsteps. This has been used for the purposes of narrative development because it foreshadows the idea that the couple are about to do something out of the ordinary...again. The scene begins with an establishing shot of the mortuary, consisting of predominantly yellow colors which could suggest that the building has aged with time. Additional...

Unit 10 - production log

We were tasked with...We began by coming up with our own ideas, mine were as written bellow.. Freddie and i decided to work together on this project, aiming to produce our own edits at the end of the assignment. We discussed how we could combine things we had thought of using the ideas we started to develop in the previous weeks. Final idea -  It is Halloween, three students are in detention. The teacher goes to his office to collect some paperwork, whilst he’s gone things start of move and fall. This sparks a conversation amongst the students about whether there is a ghost that haunts the college. They decide to leave the class whilst the teacher is gone, they go down to the basement. Adam is sure that ghosts could never be real, contrastingly Natalie is petrified to the point she believes the ghost will take her soul. They are sat around, nothing happens. The students are still talking about their theories when dust from the ceiling comes crashing down, through the gaps cree...

Rules of continuity -

30 degree rule - The 30 degree rule suggests that the camera should move a minimum of 30 degrees to the subject between successive shots of the same person or object. If the camera is moved less than 30 degrees the results will look something like a jump cut, and that will become jarring and distract the viewer from the story 180 degree rule - T he  180 degree rule  is a basic guideline that refers to the spatial relationship between a character and another character or object in a scene by keeping the camera on one side of the two characters. this technique allows the viewer to take in any unseen movement happening behind or around the main subject.  This is an example of breaking the 180 degree rule taken from 'The Shining'.  Jack Torrance is the newly hired, mentally unstable caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, he confronts the ghost of Delbert Grady in the bathroom of the hotel bar, when Jack goes to clean up after he has spilled a drink on himself...
