Unit 10 - production log

We were tasked with...We began by coming up with our own ideas, mine were as written bellow..

Freddie and i decided to work together on this project, aiming to produce our own edits at the end of the assignment. We discussed how we could combine things we had thought of using the ideas we started to develop in the previous weeks.

Final idea -  It is Halloween, three students are in detention. The teacher goes to his office to collect some paperwork, whilst he’s gone things start of move and fall. This sparks a conversation amongst the students about whether there is a ghost that haunts the college. They decide to leave the class whilst the teacher is gone, they go down to the basement. Adam is sure that ghosts could never be real, contrastingly Natalie is petrified to the point she believes the ghost will take her soul. They are sat around, nothing happens. The students are still talking about their theories when dust from the ceiling comes crashing down, through the gaps creeps the ghost. The students are in shock, hiding behind Adam. The ghost is trying to convince them that she is not scary and she means no harm. She has been watching every student for years, she says that they should stop being nasty to people and live life to the fullest. She promises to help them make them fix their mistakes if they promise to change.

We worked together to start developing our idea, some of the things we discussed included - what type of stereotypes did we want to portray, how would the ghost be presented (CGI or live action), what styles will we reference. We also discussed what our target audience would be, and what our unique selling point would be.

Target audience - The primary target audience for most horror/thriller films are aged between 15 – 25, this is at a time when personalities are beginning to emerge, they are in the key stages of development and they want to try new things and experiment with different feelings and emotions. They want to rush into things without thinking, seeking thrill – horror/thriller films provide this through… Horror movies are able to excite younger viewers easier than more mature one. Younger viewers are also less susceptible to darker violent imagery, whereas it could make an older audience feel negatively about the film. Furthermore, our film will be set in a school which is environment people in this age bracket will be able to recognize or remember vividly. Every school has a ghost story that goes down each year group. Liberty high is haunted by X, she haunts the college looking for her daughter.

USP- Our unique selling point is how we are going to portray our ghost, stereotypically ghosts are nasty bitter figures with bad intentions. We will be going against that, our ghost will be a friendly figure, looking over the shoulder of three students she. She will help them when they are in trouble and protect them when they are in danger. She has their best interest at heart, she just wants to make sure they don’t waste life away being unpleasant. We will combing CGI with live action, we have chosen to do this because it adds a sense of realism and making ghosts apart of everyday life.

Then we began to think about the pre-production paperwork we would need to complete. We split it up fairly evenly so we could complete it over the weekend- i am doing locations, characters, personnel, costumes and filmic inspirations, whilst Freddie works on the equipment, budget.

We are aiming to get the pre-production element done within the next week. We have set this deadline as it will give us the maximum amount of time for filming and editing, as well as any retakes necessary.

When i was looking at filmic inspirations, i considered different ghost films and TV show. I chose to look at these so i had a clear idea of the different way ghosts can be portrayed in media. Some of the ghosts i chose to research were from film and Tv shows such as - Beetlejuice, Casper, Ghosts and Harry potter. Looking at these different styles would help give us a better idea of the kind of charteristics and behaviours we wanted to emphasize.

I began by considering the characters we were going to use, to do this we looked at stock characters to give us an idea of the kind of characteristics and behaviors they would have. Freddie and i had decoded we wanted to create a sense of balance - one should be really energetic whilst the other is flat and unenthused. I also had to think about the kind of stories our characters would have, or how they might behave in certain situations. To further refine the characters, i wrote a list of questions i would ask them. Writing these questions and answering them in the way that they would helps us know our characters better, we have a better understanding of their views, what they want in life.

Costumes should be used to reflect aspects of the characters personality, you can do this by using particular colours, pictures or slogans that might reflect any controversial thoughts they may agree with.

Freddie came into college today and told me that he was planning to leave, this caused me some distress as we have been working on this project together. Luckily, i had done almost all of the pre-production paperwork so this meant i am able to continue without too much trouble. With that considered, i made a start on writing the film.

Santa Clarita Diet - Santa Clarita Diet is an american horror-comedy series, first released on February 3rd 2017 and created by Victor Fresco, starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant. The series follows Joel and Sheila Hammond who are estate agents. The couple are faced with a series of obstacles when sheila becomes a zombie and craves human flesh. Whilst Sheilas family are trying to help sheila through this difficult time, they have to deal with neighbors and cultural norms whilst simultaneously trying to get to the bottom of a mythological mystery. This scene begins using non-degetic fast paced audio, that micmicks the sound of footsteps. This has been used for the purposes of narrative development because it foreshadows the idea that the couple are about to do something out of the ordinary...again. The scene begins with an establishing shot of the mortuary, consisting of predominantly yellow colors which could suggest that the building has aged with time. Additional...

Rules of continuity -

30 degree rule - The 30 degree rule suggests that the camera should move a minimum of 30 degrees to the subject between successive shots of the same person or object. If the camera is moved less than 30 degrees the results will look something like a jump cut, and that will become jarring and distract the viewer from the story 180 degree rule - T he  180 degree rule  is a basic guideline that refers to the spatial relationship between a character and another character or object in a scene by keeping the camera on one side of the two characters. this technique allows the viewer to take in any unseen movement happening behind or around the main subject.  This is an example of breaking the 180 degree rule taken from 'The Shining'.  Jack Torrance is the newly hired, mentally unstable caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, he confronts the ghost of Delbert Grady in the bathroom of the hotel bar, when Jack goes to clean up after he has spilled a drink on himself...
